A Dayton couple was killed in a police shootout after they hijacked a semi-truck and kidnapped the driver.

The couple, Elaine Helman (51) and Rodney Helman (54) led police on a three-hour chase before the standoff.
The incident began when the Helmans stole a semi-truck at a truck stop in Madison County, Ohio. The truck driver was still inside the cab when the Helmans took off. Police pursued the truck through several counties, and the chase eventually ended near Dayton International Airport.
During the standoff, an officer claimed that Rodney Helman aimed a firearm at him, but no shots were fired. The police then opened fire on the truck, killing both of the Helmans. The truck driver was not injured.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the incident. No officers were injured during the shootout.
