Willis was born in Inglewood, California, in 1971. She graduated from Howard University with a degree in political science in 1993 and from Emory University School of Law with a Juris Doctor in 1996. After law school, she worked as a prosecutor in the Fulton County district attorney’s office for 16 years. During her tenure, she prosecuted a variety of cases, including the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal.
In 2018, Willis transitioned to private practice. She also ran for a seat on the Fulton County Superior Court but was unsuccessful. However, she continued to make waves in the legal community. In 2019, she was appointed chief municipal judge for South Fulton, Georgia.
Willis’s big break came in 2020 when she won the election for district attorney of Fulton County. She defeated a six-term incumbent and her former boss, Paul Howard Jr. Willis’s victory was a historic moment, as she became the first African American woman to be elected district attorney in Fulton County.
As district attorney, Willis has continued to make a name for herself as a fearless advocate for justice. She has launched a criminal investigation into Donald Trump’s attempts to influence the 2020 Georgia election, and she has indicted rapper Young Thug on multiple counts of gang-related crimes and felony charges.
