Downing was a standout baseball player at Princeton University, where he was a two-time All-Ivy League selection. He was also a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
In addition to his athletic and academic achievements, Downing was known for his kind heart and his willingness to help others. He was a regular volunteer at the local soup kitchen and homeless shelter.
