Paul Reubens, the actor, and comedian who brought the beloved character Pee-wee Herman to life, died Monday after a long battle with cancer. He was 70.

Reubens’ death was announced on his Facebook page. “Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer, and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy, and belief in the importance of kindness,” the statement said.

According to, Pee-wee Herman died from Cancer, the exact type of cancer he died from is yet to be made public.


Reubens first created the Pee-wee Herman character in the early 1980s for a series of comedy sketches on the show “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” The character quickly became a cult favorite, and Reubens went on to star in the 1981 film “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and the 1985 TV series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”

Reubens’ Pee-wee Herman was a child-like man with a love of toys, magic tricks, and breakfast foods. He was known for his catchphrases, such as “I know you are, but what am I?” and “Tequila!”
