Reubens first created the Pee-wee Herman character in the early 1980s for a series of comedy sketches on the show “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” The character quickly became a cult favorite, and Reubens went on to star in the 1981 film “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and the 1985 TV series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”
Reubens’ Pee-wee Herman was a child-like man with a love of toys, magic tricks, and breakfast foods. He was known for his catchphrases, such as “I know you are, but what am I?” and “Tequila!”
